About the Championship
Sitting one step below the Premier League, the EFL Championship is the second tier of the English football pyramid and the top division of the English Football League. Its 24 clubs come from England and Wales. Coventry City are the reigning champions, having won the 2025/26 title with 95 points for their first Championship crown. Live scores, the Championship table, fixtures, results, top scorers and team statistics are all available on Football-Stats.co.uk.
How the Championship works: promotion, play-offs and relegation
Over 46 rounds, every club plays each of the other 23 twice, once at home and once away. Three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw; level teams are split by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head record.
From 2026/27 the route to the Premier League has changed. The top two still go up automatically, but the play-offs have grown from four clubs to six, covering third to eighth. In one-off eliminator ties, fifth hosts eighth and sixth hosts seventh. The two winners then meet the third- and fourth-placed sides in two-legged semi-finals, and a final decides the third promotion place. At the bottom, three clubs drop into League One.
This season's newcomers are West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers from the Premier League, plus Lincoln City, Cardiff City and Bolton Wanderers from League One.
History and records
Today's competition dates from 2004/05, when the old First Division was rebranded as the Football League Championship; the EFL Championship name followed in 2016. The division traces its lineage to the Second Division of 1892. Leicester City hold the record for second-tier titles with eight, the latest in 2023/24, yet two seasons later they were relegated to League One after a six-point deduction. Reading's 106 points in 2005/06 remain the highest season total in Football League history, while Burnley's 100 points in 2024/25 are the most by a runner-up.
Top scorer and 2025/26 numbers
Swansea City striker Žan Vipotnik finished as the 2025/26 top scorer with 23 goals. Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth kept 17 clean sheets that season. The campaign produced 1,438 goals in 552 matches, 2.61 per game, and average attendance was 22,116. Hull City took the last promotion place by beating Middlesbrough 1–0 in the play-off final at Wembley on 23 May 2026, a match settled by Oliver McBurnie in stoppage time. Sheffield Wednesday finished bottom on zero points after deductions totalling 18 points.
2026/27 season calendar
Wolverhampton Wanderers against Blackburn Rovers on Friday 14 August 2026 opened the current Championship season. The regular campaign is scheduled to finish on Saturday 1 May 2027, after which the expanded play-offs take place.
