About La Liga
La Liga, officially LALIGA EA SPORTS and known in Spain as the Primera División, is the top tier of Spanish men's football. Twenty clubs contest the 2026/27 season, with Barcelona starting as two-time defending champions after winning the 2025/26 title. On Football-Stats.co.uk you can follow La Liga live scores, the up-to-date table, fixtures, results, top scorers and match statistics.
Competition format
Each club plays the other 19 twice, home and away, for 38 matches and a total of 380 games. A win earns three points and a draw one. When clubs finish level on points, head-to-head results come before overall goal difference, so the two meetings between rivals carry extra weight.
European places for 2026/27 follow the rules in force since 2023. The top four qualify for the UEFA Champions League league phase, and a fifth Champions League place is possible if Spain earns an extra spot through its UEFA coefficient. Fifth place and the Copa del Rey winners go to the Europa League, while the next eligible club enters the Conference League play-off round. At the other end, the bottom three drop to the Segunda División. They are replaced by the top two in the second tier plus the winner of a play-off between the clubs placed third to sixth.
History and records
The Spanish league began in 1929, and Barcelona won that first edition. Real Madrid hold the record with 36 titles, ahead of Barcelona on 29 and Atlético Madrid on 11. Only nine clubs have ever been crowned champions. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Club are the only sides never to have been relegated. Lionel Messi remains the competition's all-time leading scorer with 474 goals.
Top scorers and standout numbers
Kylian Mbappé won the Pichichi Trophy for the second season running in 2025/26, scoring 25 league goals for Real Madrid. Vedat Muriqi finished second with 23, though his club Mallorca were relegated, and Ante Budimir of Osasuna was third with 17.
Barcelona sealed the 2025/26 title on 10 May 2026 by beating Real Madrid 2–0 at home, with three rounds still to play, and finished on 94 points. Across the 2025/26 campaign the league produced 1,024 goals, an average of 2.69 per match, and the average attendance was 30,944. Joan García of Barcelona took the Zamora Trophy for the best goals-against record.
Season calendar
The 2026/27 Primera División opened on the weekend of 14–16 August 2026, with some clubs given later starts after the summer World Cup. The final round is scheduled for 30 May 2027. The two Clásicos fall on matchdays 10 and 35, and the Galician derby between Celta and Deportivo returns after Deportivo's promotion alongside Racing Santander and Málaga.
