About League One
League One is the third tier of English football and the middle division of the English Football League (EFL), sitting below the Championship and above League Two. Twenty-four clubs contest the 2026/27 season, and the reigning champions are Lincoln City, who won the 2025/26 title. On Football-Stats.co.uk you can follow League One live scores, the current table, fixtures, results, top scorers and match statistics.
League One format and promotion rules
Every club plays the other 23 twice, home and away, for 46 league matches. A win earns three points and a draw one. Teams level on points are separated by goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head results.
For 2026/27 the top two are promoted automatically to the Championship. Clubs finishing third to sixth enter the play-offs, with two-legged semi-finals and a one-off final at Wembley; the winner takes the third promotion place. The bottom four drop into League Two.
History and records
The division took the name Football League One in 2004/05, replacing the old Second Division as the third level of the pyramid. Wigan Athletic have won it more often than anyone, lifting the trophy three times (2015/16, 2017/18 and 2021/22). The points record belongs to Birmingham City, who collected 111 in 2024/25. One unusual name in the 2026/27 line-up is Leicester City: Premier League champions in 2015/16, they returned to League One after relegation from the Championship, having already won this division in 2008/09.
Top scorers and standout numbers
Dom Ballard of Leyton Orient finished 2025/26 as the League One top scorer with 23 goals. Lincoln City took the 2025/26 title with 103 points from 31 wins, 10 draws and five defeats, 12 points clear of runners-up Cardiff City. Bolton Wanderers, fifth in the table, completed the promotion trio by beating Stockport County 4–1 in the play-off final at Wembley on 24 May 2026. The 2025/26 relegated clubs were Exeter City, Rotherham United, Port Vale and Northampton Town.
Season calendar
The 2025/26 campaign ran from 1 August 2025 to the play-off final on 24 May 2026. The 2026/27 EFL season opened on the weekend of 14 August 2026, and the regular League One season is scheduled to finish on Saturday 8 May 2027, with the play-offs to follow. Sky Sports is the EFL's UK broadcaster and showed opening-weekend League One fixtures live.
