About League Two
Fourth in the English pyramid and the lowest of the three English Football League (EFL) divisions, League Two is the final step between non-League football and the professional leagues above. Twenty-four teams take part in 2026/27, and Bromley hold the title after winning it in 2025/26. Football-Stats.co.uk carries League Two live scores, the full table, upcoming fixtures, recent results, top scorers and team statistics.
How League Two works
Each season runs to 46 matches per club, with every side meeting the others home and away. Three points are given for a win and one for a draw; points, goal difference and goals scored decide places in that order.
Promotion in 2026/27 is more generous here than in the divisions above. Three clubs go up to League One automatically, and a fourth is decided by play-offs among the teams placed fourth to seventh, ending in a Wembley final. At the other end, only the bottom two lose their EFL status and drop into the National League.
History and records
Created in 2004/05 as Football League Two, the competition took over from the old Third Division as the fourth tier. Before 1992 that level was known as Division Four. Chesterfield (2010/11 and 2013/14) and Swindon Town (2011/12 and 2019/20) are the only clubs to have won League Two twice. Bromley's 2025/26 title came in only their second season as a Football League club, after they played their first League Two match in August 2024.
Top scorers and standout numbers
Aaron Drinan of Swindon Town led the 2025/26 League Two scoring chart with 22 goals and was named the division's PFA Players' Player of the Year. Bromley were champions with 87 points from 24 wins, 15 draws and seven defeats. Milton Keynes Dons and Cambridge United also went up automatically, while Notts County beat Salford City 3β0 in the play-off final at Wembley on 25 May 2026. Harrogate Town and Barrow were relegated in 2025/26, and York City and Rochdale came up from the National League in their place.
Season calendar
League Two's 2025/26 season began on 2 August 2025 and closed with the play-off final on 25 May 2026. For 2026/27, the EFL kicked off on the weekend of 14 August 2026; the last round of regular League Two fixtures is set for Saturday 8 May 2027, after which the play-offs decide the final promotion place. In the UK, Sky Sports broadcasts EFL matches and covered the opening League Two round live.
