About the Scottish Premiership
The Scottish Premiership, known as the William Hill Premiership for sponsorship reasons, is the top division of Scottish football and is run by the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL). Twelve clubs contest the 2026/27 season. Celtic are the reigning champions, having won the 2025/26 title for a fifth consecutive Premiership crown. On Football-Stats.co.uk you can follow live scores, the league table, fixtures, results, top scorers and match statistics.
How the Premiership format works
Each club first plays every other side three times, which takes the league to 33 rounds. The table then splits into a top six and a bottom six, and each team plays the others in its half once more, making 38 matches per club and 228 in total. Points carry over, and no club can leave its half after the split.
Wins earn three points and draws one; level teams are separated by goal difference, then goals scored. The 12th-placed side is relegated to the Championship. The club in 11th place faces the winner of the Championship play-offs in a two-legged Premiership play-off final for a place in the top flight.
European places depend on the final table and the Scottish Cup. Through 2025/26, Celtic and Hearts earned Champions League qualifying spots, Rangers a Europa League place, and Motherwell and Hibernian Conference League berths.
History and records
The Premiership was created in 2013, when the Scottish Premier League (1998–2013) and the Scottish Football League merged to form the SPFL; 2025/26 was its 13th season. Celtic have won 12 of those 13 titles, with Rangers' 2020/21 triumph the only exception. Across all versions of the Scottish top flight, Celtic now lead with 56 championships to Rangers' 55. The Glasgow derby between them and the Edinburgh derby between Hearts and Hibernian anchor every fixture list.
Top scorers and standout numbers from 2025/26
Motherwell forward Tawanda Maswanhise won the 2025/26 Premiership scoring race with 17 goals. The title went to the final day: Celtic beat Hearts 3–1 at Celtic Park on 16 May 2026, in front of 59,079, to finish on 82 points, two ahead of the Edinburgh side. The season produced 634 goals in 228 matches (2.78 per game) and an average attendance of 17,906. Livingston went down with 21 points, while St Mirren survived by beating Partick Thistle 2–1 on aggregate in the play-off final.
Premiership 2026/27 season calendar
The campaign opened on 31 July 2026 with Dundee United against Rangers and ends on the weekend of 15/16 May 2027. The combined international window meant no league games on 26 September or 3 October, and the SPFL has ruled out a winter break. Hearts host Hibernian on Boxing Day, Rangers meet Celtic on 2/3 January, and post-split rounds 34 to 38 run from 24/25 April.
