About Serie A
Serie A, branded Serie A Enilive under its title sponsorship deal, sits at the top of the Italian football pyramid. Twenty clubs compete in 2026/27, and Inter begin the campaign as champions after taking the 2025/26 Scudetto, their 21st, together with the Coppa Italia. Football-Stats.co.uk carries Serie A live scores, the current table, fixtures, results, top scorers and match statistics.
Competition format
The league runs as a double round robin: every side meets each opponent once at home and once away, giving 38 matches per club. Three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. Teams level on points are separated by head-to-head points and head-to-head goal difference, then by overall goal difference and goals scored. A tie for first place is not settled on these criteria but by a one-off play-off.
For 2026/27, the top four reach the Champions League league phase. The fifth-placed club and the Coppa Italia winners enter the Europa League, with sixth place moving up if the cup winners already finish in the top five, and the next club goes to the Conference League play-off round. If Italy ranks among the two best associations in that season's UEFA coefficient table, fifth place earns a Champions League berth instead. The three lowest-placed sides are relegated to Serie B.
History and records
Italy has crowned a national champion since 1898, but the single-table Serie A dates from the 1929/30 season. Juventus are the most successful club with 36 titles, followed by Inter on 21 and AC Milan on 19. The field has been fixed at 20 clubs since 2004/05. Silvio Piola holds the all-time scoring record with 274 goals.
Top scorers and standout numbers
Lautaro Martínez finished as capocannoniere in 2025/26 with 17 goals for Inter, his second scoring title after 2023/24. That is the lowest winning total since the league moved to 20 teams and three points for a win; the previous low in this century was Alessandro Del Piero's 21 in 2007/08. Donyell Malen of Roma and Tasos Douvikas of Como shared second place on 14.
Inter clinched the 2025/26 title on 3 May 2026 with three games remaining and ended on 87 points, 11 clear of Napoli. The 2025/26 season produced 922 goals, an average of 2.43 per match. Roma and Como also reached the Champions League, while Cremonese, Hellas Verona and Pisa went down.
Season calendar
The Italian top flight returned on the weekend of 22–23 August 2026, and the final round is set for 30 May 2027. Midweek rounds are scheduled for 28 October 2026 and 6 January 2027. From this season the September and October international windows are merged, leaving three breaks: late September to early October, mid-November and late March. Venezia, Frosinone and Monza joined from Serie B.
