About the UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League is Europe's premier club competition, run by UEFA for the strongest sides from its member associations. Thirty-six clubs contest the 2026/27 league phase, and Paris Saint-Germain start the season as two-time defending champions after retaining the trophy in 2025/26. On Football-Stats.co.uk you can follow Champions League live scores, the league-phase table, fixtures, results, top scorers and match statistics.

Champions League format for 2026/27

Every club plays eight league-phase matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away. A win is worth three points and a draw one. Clubs level on points are separated first by goal difference, then goals scored.

The top eight go straight into the round of 16. Sides placed 9th to 24th meet in two-legged knockout phase play-offs. Clubs finishing 25th to 36th are eliminated and do not drop into another UEFA competition. The round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals are also two-legged. When a tie is level on aggregate, two 15-minute periods of extra time follow the second leg, and then penalties if needed.

The final is a single match at a pre-selected venue. The 2027 showpiece is scheduled for 5 June 2027 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid, home of Atlético de Madrid, which also staged the 2019 final.

History and records

The tournament began in 1955 as the European Champion Clubs' Cup and was relaunched under the Champions League name in 1992. Real Madrid are the record winners with 15 titles. Paris Saint-Germain's victory over Arsenal in the 2026 final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest made them only the second club of the Champions League era to defend the title. That final ended 1–1 after extra time, and PSG won the shoot-out 4–3.

Top scorers and standout numbers

Kylian Mbappé of Real Madrid finished 2025/26 as top scorer with 15 goals, one more than Bayern München's Harry Kane, whose 14 were the most by an English player in a single edition. Mbappé's 13 goals in the 2025/26 league phase set a record for that stage, passing the 11 Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 2015/16 group stage.

Across 2025/26 the competition produced 655 goals, an average of 3.47 per match. PSG contributed 45, equalling Barcelona's single-edition record from 1999/2000.

2026/27 season calendar

The league phase opened on 8–10 September 2026 and concludes with matchday 8 on 27 January 2027, followed by the play-off draw on 29 January. Play-off ties are set for 16–17 and 23–24 February, the round of 16 for 9–10 and 16–17 March, and the quarter-finals for 6–7 and 13–14 April. Semi-final first legs follow on 4–5 May.
