About the Premier League
The Premier League is the top division of English football, a 20-club competition that sits above the EFL Championship in the national pyramid. Arsenal start the 2026/27 season as champions after winning the 2025/26 title with 85 points, their first league crown in 22 years. On Football-Stats.co.uk you can follow Premier League live scores, the current table, fixtures, results, top scorers and match statistics.
Premier League format, relegation and European places
Each of the 20 clubs meets every other side home and away, which gives 38 matches per team and 380 in a season. A win earns three points and a draw one. Teams level on points are separated by goal difference and then goals scored; if the title, a European place or relegation is still undecided, head-to-head results apply, with a play-off at a neutral venue as the last resort.
The bottom three go down to the Championship and are replaced by its top two plus the play-off winner. For 2026/27 that meant Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City coming up in place of West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers. The top four qualify for the UEFA Champions League, and a fifth place is added when England earns one of UEFA's two European Performance Spots, as it did for 2026/27. Europa League and Conference League places depend on league position and on the domestic cup results.
History and records
The league was founded on 20 February 1992, when First Division clubs broke away from the Football League, and its first season was 1992/93. It began with 22 clubs before dropping to 20 in 1995/96. Manchester United have won the most Premier League titles, 13, ahead of Manchester City with eight. Arsenal's 2025/26 success was their fourth. Alan Shearer remains the all-time leading scorer with 260 goals.
Top scorers and key numbers from 2025/26
Erling Haaland won the 2025/26 Golden Boot with 27 goals for Manchester City, five more than Brentford's Igor Thiago. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes set a single-season assists record of 21. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya kept 19 clean sheets to take the Golden Glove, and the champions conceded only 27 goals, the fewest in the division. Across 2025/26 the league produced 1,045 goals, an average of 2.75 per match, while average attendance stood at 41,634.
2026/27 season calendar
The current campaign opened on the weekend of 22 August 2026, a week later than the previous season because of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The final round is scheduled for Sunday 30 May 2027, with all ten matches kicking off at the same time. Fixtures are spread over 33 weekends and five midweek rounds, and the festive programme is arranged so that no two rounds fall within 60 hours of each other.
